The Living Room
a view through a doorway into our past
|
|
|
 |
The visitor to ‘The Living Room’ is brought into
the light formality of a traditional 1930's/1940’s home. The wooden
‘beinge’ (wooden bench) and the functional beauty of a dresser sit in a cosy
arrangement around the sturdy black stove with the grand title
of Victoress No 7. |

Leaning away
from the museum standard of cased objects and captions, Comunn
Eachdraidh Bharraidh agus Bhatarsaidh have opted for a narrative
exhibit in sound to accompany the display featuring stories and
music recorded at a lively session in the Dualchas.
The sound exhibit captures the true atmosphere of a hearthside
house ceilidhs with blends of Gaelic voices and songs
intermingled with pipe tunes, accordion notes and mouth organ
music. |

‘The Living
Room’ was part of a larger project, 'Links – Partnership for
Change' developed by the local authority museums
service, Museum nan Eilean and supported by the Scottish Museums
Council’s Strategic Change Fund. The exhibition was devised in
close partnership with Comunn Eachdraidh Bharraidh agus
Bhatarsaidh. |

The Schools
of Barra |
|
This exhibition showcases
photographs of school groups from the early 1900. The
photos are accompanied by extracts from the school logbooks
which give an insight into the hard social conditions which
faced most people on the islands. |
