Since
opening in 1996, Dualchas has welcomed people from throughout
the world to enjoy and explore the rich history and colourful
culture of the Barra Isles. Situated within easy walking
distance from the main street in Castlebay, Dualchas is placed
in a prime location looking out over the bay to the southern
islands. Dualchas has two main galleries and presents a
changing programme of local history displays, art exhibitions
and cultural events. The centre is run by volunteers
who live and work
on Barra. Dualchas is a visible commitment made by the
community towards preserving Barra heritage and sharing their
stories with people worldwide. |

The Collections |
 |
|
|
|
The collections are at the heart of the Dualchas. Richly varied
and reflecting the changing lifestyle and landscape of the Barra
Islands, they bring together strands of local culture
and social history. From simple hand crafted wooden
furniture to the vivid colouring of ornaments and personal
treasures, the collections embrace all aspects of island life
and history - from maritime and crofting to home life and
leisure.
